Spec buying guide

Phones: what the specs mean

Storage is where your photos, apps and WhatsApp media live. 128GB suits most people; choose 256GB if you shoot a lot of video or keep many apps.

RAM affects how smoothly apps switch. 4GB handles everyday use, while 8GB keeps heavier apps and games running smoothly.

Battery is measured in mAh. A 5,000mAh battery is a comfortable choice for a full day of normal use. Check the fast charging wattage too.

Screen size, type and refresh rate matter. AMOLED screens give richer colours, and 90Hz or 120Hz makes scrolling feel smoother.

Laptops: what the specs mean

Processor: Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 5 handle study, office work and multitasking well. Core i3 suits lighter use.

RAM: 8GB is a good minimum for Windows laptops today.

Storage: choose an SSD. It starts up and opens files much faster than an older hard drive. 256GB suits documents and study; 512GB gives more room.

Screen: 15.6 inches is comfortable for spreadsheets and video; 14 inches is lighter to carry.

New or refurbished?

Refurbished business laptops can give you better specs for the money. New laptops suit buyers who want a fresh machine from the start. Compare both in our laptops section.
