Buying a refurbished laptop in Kenya: a checklist before you pay

2 min read

Refurbished laptops are popular for good reason. A well-kept business laptop can offer solid build quality, a good keyboard and strong specs for less than a comparable new machine. But no two refurbished units are identical, so it pays to check carefully. Here is a straightforward checklist.

Why consider refurbished?

  • More spec for the money. You can often get more RAM or a better processor within the same budget.
  • Durable designs. Business models are usually built for daily use and travel.
  • Less waste. Giving a good machine a second life is kinder to the environment.

Ask the right questions first

Before looking at the laptop itself, ask:

  1. What processor, RAM and storage does it have?
  2. Is the storage an SSD?
  3. What is the battery condition?
  4. Does it come with a charger?
  5. What are the return or after-sales terms?

Get the answers clearly, and in writing where you can.

Physical checks

Screen

Open a plain white page and then a plain black one. Look for dead pixels, bright patches, lines or discolouration. Tilt the lid gently to check the hinge feels firm and does not wobble.

Keyboard and touchpad

Open a text document and press every key, including the number row and function keys. Test left and right clicks, scrolling and the touchpad response.

Ports

Plug in a USB flash drive to every USB port. Test the headphone jack, HDMI if you need it, and the charging port. A loose charging port is a common fault.

Body

Minor scratches are normal. Cracks near the hinges, missing screws or a bulging base are not. A raised or uneven bottom panel can be a sign of a swollen battery, so walk away from that one.

Battery health

The battery is the part most likely to show its age. On Windows, you can generate a battery report by opening Command Prompt and typing powercfg /batteryreport. Compare the full charge capacity with the design capacity. The closer they are, the healthier the battery.

If the battery is weak but everything else is good, factor in the cost of a replacement or plan to use it mostly near a socket.

Performance and software

  • Restart the laptop and note how quickly it boots. An SSD should feel quick.
  • Open a browser with several tabs and play a video.
  • Check the operating system is activated and updates install.
  • Test the webcam, microphone and speakers with a quick video call.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi and check it stays connected.

Who refurbished suits

A refurbished laptop is a smart choice for students, small-business owners and anyone who needs reliable office work, browsing and video calls on a budget. If you need the latest graphics power for gaming or heavy video editing, a newer machine may suit you better.

Quick summary

  • Confirm specs, SSD and charger
  • Check screen, hinge, keys and ports
  • Look for any bulging under the laptop
  • Run a battery report
